Why is it in art that Angels are shown to be very beautiflul females with wings? In the Bible the two angels that are named are masculine. They are also said to be men. The first thing they usually said to who they were talking to is "fear not". I don't see them as being female or having wings.

I am courious as to your thoughts.

I agree - the popular culture view of angels is nothing like the descriptions in the Bible. In fact - some passages describe more than one set of wings...

Cherubim:
Ezekiel 10:20-22

Seraphs:
Isaiah 6:1-3

The angels that appear to people though, I don't recall them ever being described as having wings at all. For example the angels that were at the tomb of Jesus, or the one who appeared to Mary and Joseph.

It is an interesting discussion. :)

The ones that appeared to Abraham and Lot were described as "men" and it seems to me that they were just about all feared at first. Especially the one who appeared to Daniel.

Like you I was of the understanding the angels of the lord were men.

When reading younger books and esp when shown pictures of the
baby Jesus when younger myself, there were winged angels shown.
They were neither female or male just very sweet younger looking
angels with wings. I always took this to be more appealing and
less fearful for children.

Female angels are more on the Christmas card and scrapbook images are taken to represent angels to the majority and therefore more
appealing to many to look at in a piece of Art!
:iconrelativestranger:
why can't there be female angels, just because the ones named happen to be males, also i feel he don't be afraid thing may not be because the angels were big and scary but just because a bloody great man has just appeared out of nowhere in a flash of light, which would surely scare anyone at first

I have always been under the thought that angels are neither gender and have no genatalia or
reproductive organs, because they were not made for that purpose. I also believe that if we were
to actually see an angel, at least in this world in its true form, there would be reason to be scared.
Do you think the people of Sodom and Gommorah were scared when the Lord sent the angel to
destroy everything? I do believe that angels have been glamorized in our modern culture, but I
also know that angels are servants of God, and the fallen ones are what we refer to as demons
and servants of Lucifer. God created angels for specific purposes, and eventhough they may have
seemingly more power than us now, we will one day rule over the angels in Heaven. We are
created in the image of God, not angels. Angels were meant to serve, that is what infuriated the
most beautiful of them all Lucifer, and what caused him to be banished from heaven forever.
People still believe that the devil has all this power, but he has already been defeated, and only
has the power to decieve the weak. Satan only has as much power as we choose to give him,
and the life we have in Christ has already defeated death and all the schemes of Hell. Christ is
the commander of angel armies, and we are in Him.

Hebrews 13:2 says: Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,
for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

I do believe angels are among us, some good, some bad. All are here for a reason and according to God's purpose.
Maybe it is a test from God, or maybe sent to give a message to someone, but I believe that while they are among us,
they are very much disguised from their true form, otherwise I think we would be scared of something we were not
meant to comprehend in this life of flesh.

Hm, I've heard and read on several occasions (including Koran) that angels cannot compare to humans, because they were made as humans' servants...
